The Humane Society Naples invites friends of felines everywhere to celebrate “Cinco de Meow” on Friday, May 3 from 6:00pm – 8:00pm at Shula’s Steakhouse (located in the Hilton Naples on Tamiami Trail North). This feline fiesta is the purrfect social event of the month, and will feature dozens of adoptable cats and kittens from the no-kill pet shelter.

Admission is $10 per person and all contributions make a positive impact on the thousands of pets which rely on The Humane Society Naples for shelter and adoption services each year. Light hors d’oeuvres and feline-themed drinks “Ginger Tabby” & “Purrfect Punch” will be served. Attendees at the event will also be encouraged to purchase a “shining star” from Veterinarian Kim Traugott to receive professional pet advice about their own furry felines.

A few reminders:
1) Registration begins at 7:00pm on Friday evening.
2) The reception and program will be hosted under the tented event plaza at the Naples Botanical Garden, located at 4820 Bayshore Drive, Naples, FL 34112. The attire for the evening is black tie optional. The forecast is for it to be a little cool that evening during the reception so plan your dress accordingly.
3) Your name will be held at the registration table; there have been no formal tickets mailed to registrants.
4) You may preregister your credit card with us at registration; please select this option to expedite checkout at the conclusion of the event.
5) Spirits and wine are complimentary for the evening, so no payment of cash or tickets is necessary for bar service. Please enjoy responsibly.

Humane Society volunteers and adoption counselors have taken the time to pair “Purrfect Matches” of compatible pets. Each pair may be two cats, two dogs, or a cat and a dog. These pairs have been placed on the “Purrect Match” list and during the week of Valentine’s Day, any of these pairs on the list can be adopted for the low fee of $14.

Pet lovers will not only be saving money on Valentine’s Day with this great adoption deal, but they’ll also be keeping best friends together forever!

Of course, all pets adopted from The Humane Society Naples come with such value-extras as a medical exam, vaccinations, sterilization surgery, ID microchip and 30-days of free pet health insurance.

Our Pet Columbarium, located in the Yawney Family Courtyard at our main shelter, provides a permanent place of containment of your pet’s remains. Each niche measures 12″X12″X12″ and can house an appropriate number of urns within the space allotted. The niche is capped with an individual customized plaque memorializing your pet or pets in perpetuity.

Calling all Dog Lovers!

Our shelter uses Kuranda Dog Beds for our puppies awaiting adoption, as they are durable, easy to clean and the pups like to snuggle up in cozy piles on them.  However, many of our beds are becoming worn and we need to replace many of them.

With national news covering sweltering heat waves nationwide, we Floridians may take the heat in stride. But leaving a pet in a car even for ‘just a minute while you run in to grab a coffee’ can be a death sentence.

Often pet parents think if they crack the windows the pet will be okay for the duration of a grocery shopping trip. Not so.

“Automobile temperatures can quickly rise to dangerous levels; the average temperature increase in a parked car is 40 degrees, and the majority of this increase occurs in the first 15 to 30 minutes,” says Dr. Linda George, Medical Director of the Humane Society Naples animal clinic. When it’s 80 degrees outside, inside your car can be a staggering 102 degrees after 15 minutes. Even with the windows left slightly open, the temperature can reach 120 degrees in just half an hour.

And unlike humans, dogs can not fan themselves or open the door for cooler air. They are stuck inside the vehicle-oven and will overheat quickly. A dog’s normal body temperature ranges from 101 to 102.5 degrees. Dogs can withstand a body temperature of 107 to 108 degrees for only a very short time before suffering brain damage – or even death, according to the Animal Protection Institute.

What steps should you take if you see an abandoned dog in a car?

Try to Locate the Pet Parent
Go into the nearby store and ask the manager to make an announcement.
Educate
If you do find the owner of the pet, ask them to let the dog out of the car or turn on the a/c while you speak with them. Calmly discuss the dangers of leaving a dog in a hot car.
Call Animal Control or the Collier County Sheriff’s Office.

Fourteen states have enacted specific laws that protect dogs in hot cars but sadly Florida is not one of them. Even so, if the dog dies this can count as animal cruelty. Call Collier County Domestic Animal Services, phone number (239) 252-PETS or the police (239) 774-4434.
